Awards & Recognitions
The Decision Sciences Institute is committed to identifying and amplifying the distinguished contributions made to the decision sciences by our members.
To do so, DSI has established two categories of honors: award competitions and Institute recognitions.
- Members may submit their work to be considered for Conference Award Competitions.
Conference Award Competitions
DSI confers Conference Awards upon work that is submitted by members. At least one author must attend and present the paper at the annual conference. Awards distributed at the Awards Luncheon on Monday afternoon.

Best Paper Awards
Track chairs for each Annual Conference nominate the best papers that pertain to the theory and/or practice of their tracks. Each track chair can nominate up to three papers deserving of consideration for the Best Paper Awards. Winning paper receives a $500 award.

Best Teaching Case Studies Awards
This competition identifies and recognizes outstanding teaching case studies related to all DSI disciplines. All case authors are invited to submit their new and innovative cases to the competition. Winning paper receives a $500 award.

DSI Chapter Best Paper Presentation Award
Recognizes research contributions made at the chapter level through a competition among regional and international annual conference Best Paper winners. All Chapters are invited to submit one entry to compete for the award. Winning paper receives a $500 award. Other Chapter entries receive a $250 award.

Instructional Innovation Award
New, innovative, and effective ways to illustrate key concepts are often what make for a memorable and enhanced learning experience. This competition identifies and recognizes outstanding pedagogical innovations in the classroom. Winning paper receives a $500 award.

Doctoral Research Showcase Award
Doctoral students are the future scholars of our field, and this track is meant to highlight these future scholars by showcasing their doctoral research. This award is exclusively for doctoral student papers that are in advanced stages of conceptualization, with the objective of the showcase then to receive mentoring and feedback on these papers. Winning paper receives a $300 award.

Emerging Economies Research Award
Increasing attention and focus on emerging economies’ issues and opportunities motivates the need to publish more research focused on emerging economies’ issues in mainstream journals. At the 2024 Decision Sciences Institute Conference, we are excited to feature a track on Emerging Economies which will comprise showcase and regular sessions. Winning paper receives a $300 award.

Elwood S. Buffa Doctoral Dissertation Award
This award identifies and recognizes outstanding doctoral dissertation research, completed in the calendar year prior to the conference, in the development of theory for the decision sciences, the development of methodology for the decision sciences, and/or the application of theory or methodology in the decision sciences. Winning dissertation receives a $1,000 award.
